Mari Walks
Move before you feel ready.

I believe people are capable of extraordinary reinvention. Because sometimes you move first, despite any fear, and confidence catches up later.
Mari is the founder of The Bad Runners, a storyteller, cancer survivor, mum, HYROX athlete and runner.
Mari Walks — Founder of The Bad Runners
Move before you feel ready.
From the first shaky mile, Mari Walks has championed flawed beginnings, resilient comebacks, and a bolder, kinder running culture through The Bad Runners.

Founder Story
I don’t believe in waiting for the perfect moment.
Fear didn’t disappear. Uncertainty didn’t disappear. I just stopped waiting for them to.
New country. New career. Motherhood. Cancer. Return to sport. HYROX. Running. Entrepreneurship. The Bad Runners.
Mari Walks has rebuilt her life more than once. She left behind everything familiar — a home country, a career, a version of herself — and started again with nothing but the decision to move forward. Each chapter arrived not when the conditions were right, but when staying still became more frightening than the unknown ahead.
Motherhood reshaped her. A cancer diagnosis cracked her open. And sport — running, HYROX, the sheer stubborn act of lacing up and showing up — became the language through which she rebuilt herself again. Not because she felt ready. Not because she had a plan. Because action, however shaky, was the only thing that moved her forward.
The Bad Runners was born from that same impulse. Not a brand, not a product — a community built around the radical idea that you don’t have to be good at something to begin it. That the messy middle, the wrong pace, the shaky first mile — these are not obstacles to belonging. They are the entry point.
This is not a story about fearlessness. It is a story about deciding — again and again, across countries and diagnoses and finish lines — that fear and uncertainty do not have to disappear before you act. They just have to come with you.
What I Believe
The convictions that shape everything.
These are not slogans. They are the ideas that kept showing up — in a first run, a hard diagnosis, a new country, a community built from scratch.
Courage comes before confidence.
Confidence rarely arrives before the first step — it tends to be built by taking it. Waiting until you feel certain is waiting for something that only movement can actually create. The act itself is where assurance begins to grow.
Reinvention is available more than once.
Changing direction is not a sign of failure — it is a sign of honest attention to where you actually are. People are not fixed. At different stages of life, in different circumstances, beginning again is not only possible. It is sometimes the most courageous thing available.
Belonging should not be earned through performance.
A finish time does not determine whether someone deserves a place in a community. People deserve warmth and welcome before they have proved anything — not as a reward for showing up already polished, but as the foundation that makes showing up possible in the first place.
Effort deserves recognition.
Results never tell the whole story. The work that happens in the dark — the early mornings, the self-doubt pushed through, the decision to try again after a hard day — that is where the real story lives. Persistence and bravery matter, regardless of what the scoreboard says.
The Community
The Bad Runners
Running is the entry point. But what happens inside The Bad Runners goes much further — it is about courage, belonging, self-trust, resilience, and the willingness to do hard things before you feel ready to do them.
✦
You do not have to qualify to belong.
The Bad Runners was built on a radical idea: a finish time, a pace, or a podium place does not determine whether someone deserves warmth, welcome, and a place in the group. Belonging is the foundation — not the reward.
✦
Your effort counts before your performance does.
The work that happens in the dark — the early alarm, the self-doubt pushed through, the decision to lace up anyway — that is where the real story lives. Results are a footnote. Persistence is the headline.
Mari Walks is the philosophy and public voice — the founder who lived these ideas across countries, diagnoses, and finish lines. The Bad Runners is the community putting those ideas into daily, unglamorous, joyful action. One gives the words. The other proves them true.
The Philosophy
Courage grows in community, reinvention is lifelong, and every so-called slow runner deserves a place to belong.
Mari Walks built The Bad Runners from a simple belief: that courage grows in community, reinvention is lifelong, and every so-called slow runner deserves a place to belong.

The Runner
Running Through Whatever Comes
Rain, doubt, and a race bib — that’s all you need. Mari has run events in every condition, proving that showing up is the hardest and most important part. Her running journey began with one shaky mile and has grown into a movement that welcomes every pace, every struggle, every so-called bad day.
The Athlete
HYROX & The Joy of Going All In
That jump says everything. HYROX Sydney captured Mari mid-air, arms wide, the crowd roaring behind her. For Mari, HYROX isn’t just a fitness race — it’s a celebration of what the human body can do when a community believes in it. She competes not to win against others, but to show what’s possible when you bet on yourself.
